An original painting of the Tent City and
a souvenir coin, both from the 1904 World's
Fair in St. Louis, are on exhibit at the
University City Library, said Ralph Bowser,
president of the University City Historical
Society, at the July 13 meeting of the Olive
Business Assocition. The painting is a U.
City treasure.
The Tent City spread over land, empty at
that time, on the north side of Delmar in
U. City. It was established by E. G. Lewis,
founder and first mayor. He provided low-cost
housing for visitors to the Fair if they
subscribed to one of his women's magazines.
U. City pottery, created at Lewis's U. City
art academy, is on display at the St. Louis
Art Museum in Forest Park in recognition
of U. City's connection with the 100th anniversary
of the World's Fair.
Mr. Bowser also told of a Chinese burial
ground at Hanley and Olive. As the years
passed, burials were removed and sent to
families in China or reburied in other locations.
Thomas Moton, Assistant City Manager, reported
that all the nearly 200 newly planted trees
along Olive Street Road are under warranty.
They will be replaced if they die. He said
the City Forester, Mr. Crow, has records
of the species and the planting plans of
all the trees. Mr. Moton said permanent
trash containers have been delivered and
placed in the western business area of Olive.
These containers should help to keep the
area clean.
Frank
Hill, zoning administrator of the U. City
Department of Planning and Development,
was the speaker. He said his department's
most noticeable actions deal with signs.
It responds to complaints of unfair treatment
by reviewing the city's sign regulations
and explaining the requirement of enforcement.
This means he reads the laws to the person
complaining and tells him he must follow
them.
Mr. Hill said there has been a recent decrease
in the amount of space allowable for outdoor
sales, such as sidewalk displays and marketing
activities.
Mr. Andrew Conley, Director of the University
City Residential Service, and a new member
of the OBA, Proposed a plan for working
together with the OBA to the benefit of
both organizations. New ideas are always
welcome.
After a vacation during August, the OPBA
will meet again on September 14 at the Heman
Park Community City at 6:00 P.M. To be a
part of what is happening around the Olive-University
City area, be sure not to miss it. |
