2004 CNYF at Washington University
CNYF (Chinese New Year Festival) has been a tradition in Washington University since 1990's. It is a variety show which showcases Chinese culture through the celebration of Chinese New Year. It involves about 150 Wash U undergraduate participants every year. Performances such as dancing, skit and singing are the crucial elements of the show.
This Year, the theme of CNYF was to show off the modern side of Chinese culture as well as the traditional side of it. Dances included Lion Dance - as always, Ribbon/Sleeves Dance, Parasol Dance, Aboriginal, Hip Hop, Senior Dance and Male Comedy Dance. Besides, there were also martial arts, fashion show and performances of instruments. To relate the show with the Chinese zodiac of year 2004, the skit this year was the Monkey King. It was about how Monkey King and his friends, the Monk and the Pig, carried on a mission to catch a red-envelopes thief.
CNYF was on February 7, Saturday and February 8, Sunday this year. There was a Chinese Banquet at Wash U's student center, Mallinckrodt, before Sat.'s show. Chinese items such as cell phone carriers and decorates, tissue box covers and CNYF shirts were sold before and during the intermission of Sat.'s show. Red envelopes were given to audience as a souvenir after show on both days. CNYF ended in cheers and applause on Sunday afternoon.
