Colorful Heman Park on Memorial Day, May 31st, gave a perfect showcase for the tents of Olive Street Road merchants, artists and associations.
Festivities began with the "Snip" part of the "Snip and Dip" celebration, as University City officials cut the ribbon opening the newly redone swimming pool. "Dip" came next, when hardy swimmers in the crowd braved a cool day to hurry into sparkling water. Children zipped down the new water slide. Everyone was impressed with the handicapped access to the pool. Lanes for lap swimmers (What are they? Come to the pool and see.) and stands for lifeguards progressed toward the deep end with its diving boards.
 
After the ceremony, non-swimmers moved toward food and the tents of the Olive Link Expo. Dan Savory, Olive Deli and Meat Market, sold barbecued shish kebabs, brats and other meats. The Olive Farmers' Market sold hot pot stickers and spring rolls deep-fried on the spot to order. Bebe the Clown painted fantasy face decorations for children and adults. Basrbara Romero, local artist, showed her paintings. The U. City Education Foundation sold U. City High School T-shirts, hats, sweatshirts and other items. The Green Center and a political candidate had displays. Other merchants and groups, including the St. Louis Chinese American Newspaper, had displays and gave out samples of their wares.
A parking lot, crowded all day, showed how popular the Expo was. There was fun, food, and an interesting afternoon for everyone. The Olive Link area has been well established. With a start like this, next year should be even better.
