with Puccini's Sister Angelica, and Cimarosa's
The Secret Marriage. All performances are
sung in English, accompanied by members
of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and
presented at the Loretto-Hilton Center at
Webster University.
Also featured during the spring season

John Adams & Alice Goodman: NIXON IN
CHINA (new production)
June 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 (6 performances)
Production sponsors: The Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation, the National Endowment for the
Arts, AT&T, and the Whitaker Foundation
A co-production with Portland Opera, the
Minnesota Opera, the Houston Grand Opera,
and Chicago Opera Theater.
The first major U.S. production of this
modern classic since the 1987 Peter Sellars
original will be a landmark musical event
for OTSL. John Adams' minimalist score presents
striking musical characterizations of Chou
En-lai, Mao Tse-tung, Henry Kissinger, and
Madame Mao with a touching portrait of Pat
Nixon - as they symbolize the differences
between Eastern and Western world-views
during Nixon's historic 1972 trip to China.
Distinguished conductor Marin Alsop makes
her Opera Theatre debut with this production;
the director is James Robinson, who staged
OTSL's spectacular production of Miss Havisham's
Fire. Sets are by Allen Moyer with costumes
by James Schuette. Robert Orth and Maria
Kanyova are Richard and Pat Nixon, Chen-Ye
Yuan is Chou En-lai with Tracy Dahl as Madame
Mao and Mark Duffin as Mao Tse-Tung.
Lighting designer for all productions is
Mark McCullough; wigs and makeup are designed
by Tom Watson. The company's new chorus
master is Sandra Horst.
Opera Theatre of Saint Louis is a sustaining
member of the Arts & Education Council
of Greater Saint Louis, and receives major
support from the National Endowment for
the Arts, the Regional Arts Commission,
and the Missouri Arts Council.
All Opera Theatre main season productions
are accompanied by members of the Saint
Louis Symphony Orchestra. MasterCard is
