Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are
frequently used against CPA/CF
targets in Iraq. As the attachments indicate,
these devices come in many
forms and be placed anywhere thus making
anyplace a possible detonation
site. Most IEDs are either remotely controlled
so the attacker can be
selective as to time and target.
Recently an IED was discovered to have
been magnetically attached to a
vehicle in the Baghdad Green Zone. Fortunately
the device had fallen off.
It was discovered to have been one that
could be detonated by remote
control. It is unknown if the IED was attached
while the vehicle was in
or out of the Green Zone.
The above incident is a reminder that your
safety and security begins with
you. If you drive a vehicle, do you perform
the necessary inspection
before getting in to it each time? This
includes a complete 360 degree
search to include top, bottom, wheel wheels,
engine compartment, etc. If
the answer is no, then you have made the
potential attacker's job easier
and left yourself and others who may ride
in your vehicle, such as friends
and colleagues, vulnerable.
Good security habits are the best defense
for the unstable security
environment that currently exists. Practice
SAFE and be safe.
