October
16th will mark the fifth anniversary of the plane crash that took
the lives of Gov. Mel Carnahan, his son, Randy, and long-time staffer,
Chris Sifford. Marking the event, the Carnahan family announced
the creation of the Carnahan Foundation. The Foundation is committed
to the ideals and example of the Missouri governor who devoted his
life to public service and progressive government.
The publicly funded Foundation will pursue its mission through
policy research, public service initiatives, and leadership training.
"I am so pleased that over the last five years our children
and so many of our former staffers have become involved in various
aspects of public service. Obviously, Mel's life had a profound
effect on them. The Foundation is a formal and enduring way of
continuing his example," said Jean Carnahan, widow of the
governor and former U.S. Senator.
In January her son, Russ Carnahan was sworn in as the new Congressman
from Missouri's 3rd district and her daughter, Robin, became Missouri
Secretary of State. Her son, Tom Carnahan, is an attorney and
consultant practicing in St. Louis.
Already in existence is the Chris Sifford Memorial Scholarship
fund that hosts the Sifford Scramble, a golf event that raises
money for scholarships.
