Louis, Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - The unprecedented destruction
caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita requires an American Red Cross
national response that is innovative and flexible on a massive scale.
With tens of thousands of families needing our assistance for the
foreseeable future, the Red Cross is rapidly augmenting its cadre
of trained disaster volunteers.
As a leader in this national recruitment campaign, the St. Louis
Area Chapter plans to recruit and train over 800 new volunteers
by November 30. After training is complete, new volunteers will
be assigned to meet identified needs in feeding, sheltering, client
assistance, physical and mental health services, and material
support, among other key functions. Deployment to areas affected
by the hurricanes is possible.
Volunteers who meet the following basic requirements are encouraged
to attend a training session:
* Be 18 years of age or older, having completed a high school
education
* Be in good health and sign a statement to that effect
* Read, understand and sign the Red Cross “Code of Conduct?
* Hold a valid Driver’s License.
* Have and provide a Social Security Number.
* Be available for a 10 to 21 day assignment away from home.
In order to recruit and train new volunteers as quickly as possible,
new training classes are now available. Volunteers should plan
to attend one of the following sessions:
* Tuesday, November 1, 11:30a.m.-12:30 p.m.
* Tuesday, November 1, 6:00p.m.-7:00 p.m.
* Thursday, November 3, 11:30a.m.-12:30 p.m.
* Thursday, November 3, 6:00p.m.-7:00 p.m.
* Saturday, November 5, 10:00a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Each training session runs for 1 hour. Registration is not required.
All sessions will be held at the American Red Cross, St. Louis
Area Chapter, 10195 Corporate Square Drive, Creve Coeur, Missouri
63132 (on Lindbergh just north of Olive). For more information,
