The branches green delight, as Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls'
Club celebrates "Oh Christmas Tree" at the Sheer Elegance
No.17 Fashion Show. The Girls' Program fund-raiser features an
array of Famous-Barr fashions, exciting door prizes, and recognition
for community leaders and youth at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec.
10, at the Adam's Mark Hotel, 4th & Chestnut Streets. The
event is dedicated in honor of Olivia Malone, a long-time Mathews-Dickey
education volunteer, acclaimed retired St. Louis Public Schools
principal and National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., Alpha
Nu Chapter leader.
Event chair Dr. Mary Ellen Burford, education administrator,
County Hills Academy, and Co-Chair Melanie Dileo, vice president,
community affairs, Citigroup - St. Louis Contributions, are leading
the charge to meet the $116,000 fund-raising goal with a dedicated
committee of 60 professional women. A highlight is the witty repartee
of the perennial emcees, The Big 550 KTRS' Wendy Wiese and KPLR-TV,
WB 11's Christine Buck. KTVI Fox 2's Bonita Cornute and Rob Desir,
and KMOV's Richelle Carey have signed on and a representative
from KSDK NewsChannel 5 will serve as a celebrity escort.
"With tragedies like the hurricane and war in Iraq around
us, a little holiday glitz is a great refuge from the troubles
of the day," said Barbara A. Washington, the show's originator
and Mathews-Dickey vice president of public relations and special
events. "As we celebrate 'Oh Christmas Tree,' the Mathews-Dickey
Girls' Program is the tree and our young women are the branches."
In this year's holiday skit, the honorees will bring a Christmas
tree to life on stage to showcase the different opportunities
for young women to participate in the Club's full range of programs,
including health, tutoring, career readiness, leadership, sports
and more.
