University City citizens elected three
members of its Board of Education on Tuesday,
April 5. Maryanne N. Coley and Avery D.
Watson were elected to their first terms.
Robert "Bob" Elgin was elected
for his second term.
The new members of the School Board were
sworn into office on Thursday, April 7.
All the previous board members renewed their
oaths of office, and business began at that
time.
As often happens when there is only one
item on the ballot, there was a light turn-out
at the polls. Of the 27,846 registered voters
in the school district, only 2,255 votes
were cast. We believe citizens owe it to
themselves and to their communities to learn
about the candidates and to make their informed
choices at the polls. Our schools and our
children are more important than the number
of votes cast shows. We congratulate all
those who voted in this meaningful election.
Congratulations also to the excellent board
members who were elected.
