Grace Lui

An open letter to all the Hope Project Sponsors from
St. Louis Chinese Association & St. Louis Chinese American NewsTHANK-YOU

An open letter to all the Hope Project Sponsors:

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of American and Chinese sponsors, combined with unexpected increasing contributions to the St. Louis Hope Project, we are very pleased to report that we have, as of today (2/2/05), received more than $7, 800 in donations which will help more than 160 poor Chinese students go back to school for a year. This is a 120% increase from what we had last year. Your continuing and overwhelming support is one of the greatest demonstrations of love and compassion that the St. Louis Hope Project has seen since we started the project in 1999.

As you know the St. Louis Hope Project was started in 1999 by a group of faculty from St. Louis Community College, who visited China. Fifty dollars can sponsor a student's tuition for a year. The Project started with a few people and a few hundred dollars and has increased to almost a hundred sponsors and $8,000 today.

This year, thanks to the publicity and reports by Francis Yue from St. Louis Chinese American News and Jin, Nenger from the World Journal, sponsors from many other states have joined us in our efforts to bring hope to students who otherwise have to drop out school because of the financial difficulties. We would like to share with you some very moving and touching stories during the period we received the donations.

Ms. Zhang, Yueping from St. Louis Modern Language School explained the project to her class, and the class decided to sponsor a student in China. Each student donated $4. Cui, Hanqi from this class also decided to sponsor 1 students and Ms. Zhang, Yueping also sponsored 2 students by herself.

Ms. Steve Kauder and Adrianne Kauder in New York City received some funds from her friends when she lost her father. She decided the best way for her to use the funds is to help poor Chinese students remain in school. What a beautiful way to remember her father! Another family from xxx, Alva and Marcia Lee and their children preferred to donate to the Hope Project rather than spend it on Christmas gifts.. Hu, Chunhua from Colombia Missouri has sent two checks and would like to continue supporting Hope Project.

Our efforts in the United States have attracted people in China to join us. Mr. Zhang Jien Bo is the President of Hunan College of International Economy. He has pledged to match the funds we collect in St. Louis. So this year, every student we sponsor with funds from the United States will sponsor a second student with funds from China. .

A very special thanks to Liu Yang, a student at St. Louis Community College, who assists us in sorting checks, sending out letters, and corresponding with people. Because of her involvement, her parents, Yang, Zhongcu and Wang, Wei, Uncle Yang, Xinyue and Aunt Yuan, Hong sponsor four students.

We appreciate all of our sponsors, and we welcome new sponsors. With fifty dollars, you can make a big and permanent difference in someone's life. For people who would like to sponsor a stua dentstudent/students, and make a donation, please make your check payable to: St. Louis Chinese Association and send it to: P. O. Box 82, Chesterfield, MO 63017.

With warm thanks,

Hope Project Coordinators:
Margaret Johnson & Grace Liu
