State Most-Improved Schools Ranking:
Rockwood Makes the Grade

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 8, 2005 - The Rockwood School District shows its commitment to school improvement according to its ranking on the Top 10 Most-Improved Schools list released today by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Rockwood ranks second among the state's 524 public school districts, in terms of number of schools in the top 10 in the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) test results.

Rockwood finished with seven spots in the Top 10 category for Most-Improved Schools. Six different schools achieved the ranking in a total of four subject areas. Rockwood's most-improved schools include:

ELEMENTARY COMMUNICATION ARTS
Westridge Elementary

MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS ARTS
LaSalle Springs Middle, Morgan Selvidge Middle and Rockwood South
Middle

HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS ARTS
Eureka High and Marquette High

HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS
Eureka High

"I am very excited about these results," says Dr. Kathy Peckron, deputy superintendent for curriculum and school leadership. "They truly reflect the ongoing commitment of our staff and students to continuous improvements."

According to DESE, this year's Top Ten Most-Improved Schools lists recognize schools for improvement based on the largest net increase in the combined percentage of students scoring "Proficient" or "Advanced" from 2000 - 2004.

Student performance on the MAP exams is graded on a five-step scale. The levels are Step 1 (lowest), Progressing, Nearing Proficient, Proficient and Advanced.
