George, chancellor of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and
Henry Givens Jr., president of Harris-Stowe State University, today
signed an agreement enabling four UMSL graduate-level education
courses to be taught at Harris-Stowe. Credits earned can be applied
toward a Master of Education degree at UMSL.
"This collaborative effort is exciting for both institutions,"
George said. "Post-baccalaureate Harris-Stowe students will
have access to UMSL-quality master's degree courses, and UMSL
will provide these students with the opportunity to finish their
degree."
The courses are Instructional Design (3 credit hours), Foundations
in Education (4 credits), Examining History, Community & Social
Justice in Education (3 credits) and Teacher Action, Advocacy
& Leadership (3 credits). They will be taught jointly by UMSL
and Harris-Stowe faculty on the Harris-Stowe campus in midtown
St. Louis.
Students will pay the UMSL graduate tuition rate. To enroll in
these courses, students must apply and be admitted into the Graduate
School at UMSL.
"Clearly this unique cooperative between the two universities
is a 'win-win' for not only the participating students, but also
for the two universities themselves -- in many important ways
-- and is illustrative of a truly effective undertaking in collaborative
higher education in our community," Givens said.
If the initial offerings are successful, additional graduate
courses could be added, according to Charles Schmitz, dean of
the College of Education at UMSL.
"This is an attractive option for Harris-Stowe students,
and since they'll already be enrolled in UMSL's graduate program,
they'll most likely continue their learning in the College of
Education at UMSL," Schmitz said.
