| Something
outrageous happened on April 25th at 101.5 FM in NJ, as you might
have already heard.
Voice A: "Would you really vote for someone named Jun Choi?...
No ...foreign group should ever dictate the outcome of an American
election... I don't care if the Chinese (Choi happened to be a
Korean Am.) population in Edison has quadrupled, ...Chinese should
never dictate an election, Americans should."
Voice B: "Americans should, exactly." More similar
talk followed.
Voice A talking to a caller: "You got it baby. ...the quote
was Damn Orientals & Indians. "
Those were the voices of Craig Carton and Ray Rossi who called
themselves "Jersey Guys on 101.5 FM. The entire broadcast
was
actually more outrageous than the brief quotes.
Carton and Rossi aren't just clowns. On May 12th, they hosted
a debate among Republican New Jersey gubernatorial candidates.
Thanks to the efforts of a New Jersey coalition of Asian American
groups, Robert Schroeder and Todd Caliguire withdrew.
However, the 5 others, including the front-runners, did attend.
If they see Carton and Rossi get away with making such
statements without consequence, might they infer that Asian Americans
are timid and therefore that our interests can be brushed aside?
If we can't stamp out small injustices, how can we stamp out the
big ones?
Send them a message by making Carton and Rossi pay. Hyundai (a
Korean automaker), Cingular Wireless, and Bank of America have
already withdrawn their sponsorships of 101.5 FM. Let's get more
sponsors to leave 101.5 FM. Send your protest to the remaining
BIG sponsors. Use your own words to say the following:
"Join Hyundai, Cingular Wireless and Bank of America in
withdrawing sponsorship from 101.5 FM New Jersey for their blatant
racism. Otherwise, we will stop buying your products."
