OBA Meeting January, 2006

OBA Meeting January, 2006

The Olive Business Association heard from Shelley Welsch and Francine Brungardt, members of the City Council of University City, and Thomas Moton, Assistant City Manager of U. City, during its January meeting. They all discussed plans for 2006, the City's Centennial Year. They invited all merchants to join in the fun and festivities. Promoting business is as important as promoting civic progress.

Francine Brungardt serves on the Arts and Letters Commission as well as on the City Council. She reviewed the new 2006 City Calendar. That group chose the photos, and they are beautifully done. They are available from City Hall. The calendar includes a list of "100 Things To Do During the Centennial."

Shelley Welsch talked about the New Year's Day opening of the new Recreation Center on Olive. It was a great success. Refreshments, purchased to feed 1000, were gone in the first hour. She said historic City Hall, completely repaired and restored, will be opened again soon. After 100 years, the building very much needed renewal. Citizens voted for funds for the restoration.

Financial sponsors are being sought for many of this year's events. As a sponsor, business and/or individual names will be publicized. A film, "Our First Hundred Years," produced by CALOP, will be shown in early March at COCA in the U. City Loop area.

Shelley Welsch would like OBA to join with other organizations to set up a forum for candidates in the upcoming School Board and City Council elections. She said U. City will purchase a lot to go with the Sutter-Meyer House, an original U. City property run by the Historical Society of U. City. Elsie Glickert, a member of OBA, is one of the Meyer family, one-time owners of the historic house.

Thomas Moton told about the handsome black iron street lights being installed along Olive. He said they are being placed near new and improved businesses, and are paid for by the business owners themselves.

The Olive Business Directory will be mailed to businesses along Olive. The directory will be updated frequently during the year. More than 300 businesses are included, with addresses and phone numbers.

Upcoming activities this year are being planned. U. City is cooperating with the OBA in its projects. OBA membership is increasing. Come to the next meeting on February 14 at the Heman Park Community Center and tell what your business is doing to help in the growth of the new Olive Business District.

        Happy Year of the Dog!
