SLCC-Meramec Offers Free Tax Preparation Service

        For the fourth year, St. Louis Community College-Meramec is partnering withthe Internal Revenue Service to provide free income tax preparationservices.

        The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free taxpreparation services for approximately two million taxpayers annually. Eachyear, the IRS partners with higher education institutions and communityorganizations to provide VITA services throughout the United States.

        This year, 24 Meramec accounting student interns have completed the IRScertification course and are trained to prepare federal and state income taxreturns and also e-file returns. The service is offered by appointment1:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays through April 12 at the Meramec campus, 11333 BigBend Blvd.

        "Prior to the current tax season, the Meramec interns have prepared morethan 700 tax returns, and we anticipate preparing more than 300 tax returnsthis season," said Markus Ahrens, CPA, assistant professor in accounting atMeramec. "The program provides a great service for other students, lowincome households and the elderly."

        During the past four tax seasons, more than 70 Meramec students successfullycompleted the IRS certification course and participated in the VITA program.
