What: Zoo's Insectarium will be free
When: Beginning May 1, 2006
Admission to Monsanto Insectarium at the St. Louis Zoo will be free, beginning today, May 1. The Zoo has decided to waive the $2.00 admission charge as of today, the sixth anniversary of the opening of the Insectarium.
"We think invertebrates are invaluable," says Jeffrey P. Bonner, president of the St. Louis Zoo. "In fact, we want to make sure that as many of our visitors as possible get this message – that these magnificent creatures are underrated. They recycle waste, pollinate plants and support the entire cycle of life."
The Insectarium is one of a handful of exhibits in North America dedicated solely to the most predominant group of animals on Earth. There are more than 100 species of live insects in large, interactive discovery zones.
A dramatic part of the Insectarium is the Mary Ann Lee Butterfly Wing, a geodesic dome of tropical plants and flowers, rock outcroppings, a waterfall and pool. Here nearly a hundred butterflies and moths flutter near the pathways and overhead.
To celebrate the Insectarium's free admission, the St. Louis Zoo will hold "Bug Day" on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors are welcome to meet live animals, take part in fun family activities, watch roach races and make a craft to take home. "Bug Day" activities are free. |
