St. Louis County Library Asian Center August Program Guide

        Thursday, August 3, 7:00 p.m.English Conversation ClubPractice your English conversational skills and meet your neighbors twice a month on Thursdays in the Asian Center! The group will meet every first and third Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. The group is designed to help people who speak English as a second language improve their conversational skills. Additionally, the program will provide a source for one-on-one cultural exchange and provide an opportunity to make new acquaintances in the community. No program on the third Thursday of August.Registration required. For adults.

        Monday, August 7, 7:00 p.m.Flower Pot PaintingWe will be having fun painting in this program! We cannot paint the walls of our house, but we can surely paint the flower pots Mom has! The children will use poster paints to decorate an Indian pattern on the flower pots. India celebrates its Independence Day on August 15. This evening we will do an Indian pattern to honor this occasion. You can use a variety of patterns to decorate your pots once you learn the technique.Registration required. For ages 5-10.

        Tuesday, August 15, 6:30 p.m.Travel in ChinaDo you know that just a few words in Chinese can get you going a long way in China? If you plan to travel to China or just want to immerse yourself in its language and culture for a moment, come to this two-hour class and learn to communicate effectively in limited vocabulary. The program will start with the basics-greetings, introductions and farewells, and then move on to something a bit more advanced-how to order your favorite Chinese dishes, how to ask for time, price and directions, how to bargain like a native Chinese and other things that you need to know to get by in the airports, hotels and tourist sites.Registration required. For all ages.Wednesday, August 16, 7:00 p.m.

        Chinese ShuttlecockThe shuttlecock game is popular in many countries, especially in China. It is one of the most interesting games for school children and adults too. Please join us to create your own Chinese shuttlecocks and play with them in many fun ways.Registration required. For ages 5-12.Friday, August 18, 10:30 a.m.Story TimeExperience the first day of school with Suki, a Japanese-American, and Ut, a young girl from Vietnam. Discover how Suki's Japanese kimono causes laughter and applause in “Suki's Kimono.* Then share the difficulties that Ut has at a new school in Angel Child, Dragon Child. Prepare for your first day at school by making a colorful page critter in the shape of a dog or a cat to mark the page of your school book.Registration required. For ages 3-8.
