紅雀展翅高飛 勇奪世界大賽冠軍
聖路易紅雀隊主場爆滿四萬多名觀眾欣喜若狂，狂賀紅雀在美國職棒大聯盟(MLB)世界大賽第五場以四比二力克底特律老虎隊，摘下睽違二十四年的冠軍盃。
紅雀一九八二年之後曾多次與世界大賽冠軍失之交臂，今年季末更是陷入罕見的低潮，八十三勝七十八敗的戰績敬陪季後賽所有隊伍末座。誰料紅雀變身浴火鳳凰，今天奪冠可說意義非凡。
紅雀巨砲普侯斯自豪表示：「我們證明所有人都看走眼了，我們永不放棄，戰到最後一分一秒。」隊友艾德蒙斯也狂呼：「我們的成就驚動全世界！」
紅雀先發投手威佛功不可沒，面對前老東家老虎，可一點情面也沒留，主投八局只出現四支零星安打，掉兩分。他今年六月才從洛杉磯天使隊交易到紅雀，就馬上在關鍵時刻發光發亮。他語帶顫抖：「我的隊友真的很神奇，我只想幫大家一起圓夢。」
紅雀開場就先取得一分領先，但老虎在第四局展開反攻，打者歐多涅玆敲出一記高飛球，紅雀右外野手鄧肯卻恍神漏接，讓歐多涅玆攻上二壘得分位置。老虎下位打者凱西見機不可失，送上個人在世界大賽的第二支全壘打，老虎反超前二比一領先。但老虎得分就到此為止，接下來多次守備荒腔走板，替紅雀製造大好得分機會。
紅雀第五局由捕手莫里納及日籍打者田口壯先後貢獻一壘安打上壘，輪到威佛上場，打擊出去正好被老虎新生代強投韋蘭德沒收，但卻暴傳三壘。莫里納趁勢回本壘得分，田口壯也站上三壘，此時今年世界大賽令老虎聞風喪膽的艾克斯坦擊出滾地球，讓田口壯替紅雀再抓一分。
紅雀強棒羅倫第七局敲出二壘安打，把在壘上的艾克斯坦送回家再奪一分，紅雀此時可說勝券在握。紅雀最後派出「終結者」韋恩萊特把關，老虎強打凱西棒子還熱著，一人出局下又擊出二壘安打。韋恩萊特之後刺殺羅德里格玆，但卻保送波蘭科上壘，著實令人捏了一把冷汗，但他隨即從亂流中恢復，三振下名打者英吉，紅雀終於笑到最後。
身高170 艾克斯坦獲選MVP 紅雀大衛王 扳倒虎巨人
舊約聖經記載，大衛以小搏大用投石器擊倒巨人歌利亞，後來大衛建立希伯來王國，他就是後世一再傳誦的「大衛王」。在棒球的世界裡，昨日也誕生一位「大衛王」-David Eckstein 。
擔任紅雀隊一棒開路先鋒名叫大衛的艾克斯坦，身高只有一百七十公分，不過，一路引領被看扁的紅雀，扳倒季後賽摧枯拉朽亮麗晉級之大熱門老虎隊，今年世界大賽球員中最矮的他，獲選了「世界大賽最有價值球員」。
艾克斯坦在大賽前十個打數掛零，惟第三戰開始十二打數敲出八支安打，紅雀在主場最後拉尾盤的三連勝，每一場關鍵得分都與他有關。根本不管自己傷勢的艾克斯坦每一個打擊、跑壘、防守無不專注積極，無形中也鼓舞了哀兵紅雀隊員們，難怪教頭拉魯沙一再讚許：「他是我看過最拚命的球員。」
艾克斯坦闖蕩大聯盟就是以「不顧死活」出名，即使打出軟弱的「鳥球」照衝不誤，昨日第二局下他敲出三壘區滾地球，然後眼睛直視前方狂奔，就造成老虎隊三壘手英吉的傳球失誤，助三壘隊友攻下第一分；四局下他揮出內野滾地球打下球隊首度超前的第三分；七局上他敲出游擊區滾地球，老虎游擊手吉恩只是接球稍有瑕疵，就讓他跑出內野安打搶下關鍵的第四分。可以這麼說，紅雀整場共三個半局的得分攻勢都因艾克斯坦。
雀躍的一群 意外的驚喜
棄將、鐵捕、意外的守護神，這是紅雀隊拿下2006世界大賽的小人物傳奇。
紅雀隊27日封王的勝利投手傑夫韋佛，4個月前因為老弟傑瑞韋佛表現優異造成先發位置受到擠壓而被天使隊釋出。4年來他被迫換了4支球隊，今年季中被天使隊釋出，這又是他生涯的大挫敗。
30歲的韋佛一度茫茫然找不到自信，沒想到因為這個命運的轉折拿到生涯第一座世界大賽冠軍。韋佛的「青蛙王子奇遇記」成了大聯盟的傳奇一章。
世界大賽最有價值球員艾克斯坦心中的MVP並非自己而是捕手莫里納，他說：「貢獻度最高的應該是捕手莫里納，有他默默堅守，引導投手，才有冠軍。」今年國家聯盟狙殺率最高的捕手莫里納，在季後賽不但賣防守身手還秀打擊本事，共敲出季後賽最多的19支安打，包括昨日封王之役的3支安打。
溫萊特在紅雀封王戰再度進帳1個救援成功，而以4次救援成功，追平去年白襪終結者簡克斯所締造的紀錄，成為大聯盟季後賽「菜鳥救援」紀錄的共同保持人。
紅雀原本的救援王伊斯林豪森在例行賽結束前10天動了臀部手術，使得去年只出賽2場今年都擔任中繼的溫萊特頂替上陣擔任紅雀在季後賽最後一道防線。時勢造英雄，溫萊特成功的把握契機，拿到今昔許多大聯盟球星嚮往卻又無法企及的世界大賽冠軍。

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-2 to win their first World Series in 24 years on Friday, Oct. 27, 2006 in St. Louis. The Cardinals won the series in five games.
St. Louis shortstop David Eckstein had two hits, drove in two runs and scored a run. The five-foot-seven, 160-pound shortstop, stands tall as the World Series MVP.
Cards manager Tony LaRussa is the second manager to win a World Series in both leagues.
Jeff Weaver pitched eight strong innings for the win. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out nine. His only mistake was a two-run home run by Sean Casey in the fourth. Adam Wainwright closed out the Tigers in the ninth, striking out Brandon Inge with two runners on base for the final out.
The Cardinals scored twice in the fourth to go ahead. With runners on first and second, pitcher Weaver bunted. Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander threw wildly to third, letting one run score.
Eckstein, whose infield single in the second drove in the Cards' first run, drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout.Verlander's throwing error was his second of the series. Tigers pitchers made five errors in this series, one in each game. That's a record for errors by pitchers in the World Series.
The Cardinals victory erased two decades of World Series frustration. St. Louis had lost its last three World Series appearances in 1985, 1987 and 2004. Detroit was doomed by lack of hitting and poor defense. The Tigers managed just eleven runs and committed eight errors in the five-game series.
