UMSL names endowed professor of women leaders

Janet Murray has been named the E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professor for Developing Women Leaders and Entrepreneurs in International Business at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The position is an appointment through the College of Business Administration at UMSL. Murray will work closely with the university's International Business Institute, Center for International Studies, Executive Leadership Institute and Institute for Women's and Gender Studies. She will promote and strengthen opportunities for leadership roles for women in international business.

"I am honored to be a part of the UMSL faculty and to have the opportunity to work side by side with some of the country's best international business scholars," Murray said. "I've always been drawn to UMSL because of the international business program and its continuous achievement in the rankings by U.S. News & World Report."

UMSL's International Business Program was ranked as the eighth best undergraduate international business program by U.S. News & World Report this fall. The eighth place ranking for 2007 marks the fourth consecutive year in which the program has been listed in the magazine's top 20.

UMSL's International Business Program began in 1999 as a collaboration between the college and Pierre Laclede Honors College at UMSL.

Murray speaks fluent English, Chinese and French. Her research focuses on global sourcing, outsourcing and international competitive and marketing strategies. She has written numerous journal articles and book chapters, and she has held faculty appointments at Saint Louis University, Cleveland State University and City University of Hong Kong.

The Center for International Business Education and Research at Michigan State University in East Lansing identified the 89 most prolific researchers out of 1,908 scholars in international business between 1996 and 2005. Murray was ranked 21st among the scholars and number one among women international scholars.

Murray, of Ballwin, Mo., earned a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Wisconsin in River Falls and a master's degree in business from Missouri State University in Springfield. She earned a doctoral degree in marketing and international business from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
