The University of Missouri-St. Louis has become the new home to the ELS Language Center. The partnership began last fall as the center relocated from Maryville University in St. Louis to UMSL.
"Many of our students were looking for a larger university with more course offerings," said Allen Stout, director of the center. "We found that in UMSL."
The center, located on UMSL's south campus, offers international students an opportunity to prepare themselves to study at universities throughout the United States.
ELS students have two choices, the intensive 30-hour a week program or the semi-intensive 20-hour a week program. The programs are offered several times throughout the year, allowing flexibility to students.
After completing the program, students will be prepared to speak, read and writing in English.
Joel Glassman, director of the Center for International Studies at UMSL, said the partnership is beneficial to the center, students and UMSL.
"The university is becoming more and more global," he said. "International students are seeking acceptance in many of our top ranking programs and the new partnership with ELS will allow these students to prepare themselves for the classroom."
While enrolled in the ELS programs, students live on or near campus and take part in many of the university's activities.
"We really want students to enjoy the program and have an opportunity to experience campus life and interact with American students," Stout said.
With more than 40 locations in the United States, ELS Language Centers are the largest network of campus-based English language instruction centers in the world.
