OCA Acceptance Speech Connie He
I am extremely honored to be selected as the recipient of the OCA Youth Leadership Award. I am happy to accept this recognition. I am grateful to the OCA scholarship committee and Professor Cody Ding for offering me this award so that I have the opportunity to come here tonight.
My involvement with the Chinese American community, here in St. Louis, would not have been possible without the support of the St. Louis Modern Chinese School. For the past 9 years, I have been able to contribute to the annual events of Chinese Cultural Days at Missouri Botanical Gardens and to take part in many cultural activities. These experiences have allowed me to build stronger relationships with all of my fellow Chinese peers. In addition, I have been able to embrace and appreciate the Chinese culture more fully. Being Chinese has truly enriched my life and established my identity.
I have done my best to be a leader in my school community. My participation in Mu Alpha Theta and Quizbowl is very extensive. These two clubs are the most important to me and I am very dedicated to both. Through my activity in both these clubs, I have been able to develop important skills that define me as a leader.
Often, Asians, especially Chinese Americans are labeled academically as the "model minority." In my opinion, this is an honor. I believe that the Chinese culture places enormous value on education that truly makes us role models for others. Many young Chinese Americans, like myself, are second generation immigrants and I believe it is important for our generation to realize the adversity and hardships our parents had to overcome to give us the comfortable and privileged lifestyles we have today.
Thus, I am very thankful for my parents, who have instilled in me the ambition and the motivation to succeed and to achieve my goals. In the future, I hope to promote a greater understanding of the contributions of Chinese Americans in the US and inspire others to be leaders as well.
Thank you!
