SLCC CHANCELLOR ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT, NEW POSITION

        April 23, 2007 - St. Louis Community College Chancellor Henry D. Shannon,Ph.D., announced at the April 23 meeting of the Board of Trustees his intentto retire after 24 years with the college. His last day at the college willbe August 31.

        Chancellor Shannon also announced that he will accept the position ofsuperintendent and president at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca. Hewill start his new position onSept. 1.

        "Of course, I have mixed emotions about leaving St. Louis CommunityCollege," said Shannon. "The position at Chaffey offers an outstandingprofessional opportunity for which I can provide leadership to move thecollege to a multi-campus institution. It is time to take on newchallenges."

        Shannon noted his many achievements as SLCC's chancellor, including theaddition of a fourth campus in Wildwood opening in August; the opening of anew South County Education Center in 2003; the opening of the Emerson Centerfor Engineering and Manufacturing at the Florissant Valley campus in 2004;the advancement of instructional and functional technology throughout thedistrict; and the planning and development of the new Harrison EducationCenter to be located on Cass Ave. in the JeffVanderLou neighborhood, whichcurrently is in the design phase. "I have had the honor to work withremarkable and dedicated students, employees and board members who arededicated to making SLCC a premier community college system with nationwiderecognition," said Shannon.

        Chaffey College, which serves 17,000 students, began construction of a $43million full-service campus, the Chino Campus, earlier this year. Classeswill be held at the campus in January 2008.

        "The members of the Board of Trustees are indebted to Dr. Shannon for hisleadership during the past six years," said Robert Nelson, president of theSLCC Board of Trustees. "He has raised the college's profile across thestate and the country, and has made significant progress in strategicplanning that will continue to move this institution forward."

        Shannon began his SLCC career in 1983 as dean of Student Services at theForest Park campus and was named president of the campus in 1992. He wasnamed chancellor in January 2000 after serving as acting chancellor for fourmonths.

        No timeline has been set for the Board of Trustees to name an actingchancellor.
