Carnahan Meets with Democratic Reform Activist and Community Leaders in China
Jefferson city, Missouri - Secretary of State Robin Carnahan recently returned from Beijing, China as part of a delegation organized by the Aspen Institute-Rodel Public Leadership Fellowship program. The bipartisan delegation met with political and community leaders in the country to discuss various topics including economic development, democratic governance, energy and the environment.
Secretary of State Robin Carnahan met and discussed human rights and democracy issues with Li Fan, a leading grassroots organizer in China and director of the Beijing think tank The World and China Institute. Mr. Fan has been one of the foremost advocates for democratic elections in China since the early 1990s.
"China's economic development in the past 20 years has been remarkable," said Carnahan. "As China's economic reforms continue, I am encouraged that leaders like Li Fan have the courage to speak out about the need for corresponding political reforms."
Carnahan was selected as one of the top 24 "rising stars" in American politics by the Aspen Institute in 2005. Carnahan's selection into the program followed the Aspen Institute's eight-month selection process involving input from more than 1,400 business, political, and civic leaders to select 24 of "the very best of the nation's emerging leaders" to discuss broad issues of democratic governance and effective public service. The Aspen Institute-Rodel Fellowship includes participation in a series of programs to discuss effective government and leadership.
The Aspen Institute-Rodel Fellowships in Public Leadership seeks to bring together the nation's most promising young political leaders to explore the values of democracy, community, and the responsibilities of public leadership in order to help America's brightest young leaders achieve their fullest potential in public service.
