The program was developed to encourage professional librarianship in Missouri's school, public and academic libraries and is now in its fourth academic year. Financial support for future librarians increases the professional library workforce by encouraging individuals who might otherwise not have the resources for higher education to become librarians.

"Our public libraries are an important part of educating our citizens and keeping our communities vibrant and strong," said Carnahan. "I am pleased that we can provide these scholarships because investing in our future librarians is an investment in the future of our communities."
