In 1971, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution calling on all member countries to adopt Oct. 24, the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, as a world holiday. The resolution for the celebration of a global holiday was largely the result of a letter writing campaign by Dorothy Schneider, a St. Louis teacher.
The annual contest is sponsored by the Center for International Studies at UMSL and funded by a gift from Schneider. The contest is centered on the theme "United Nations Day, Oct. 24: A World Holiday."
