LOS ANGELES, CA - On Friday, Asian Pacific Americans for Progress (APAP) - a national network of Asian American and Pacific Islander community leaders and grassroots activists - officially announced their endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for President.
In its endorsement letter to Senator Obama's campaign, Curtis Chin, National Board Chair of APAP, wrote:
"On behalf of the members of the Asian Pacific Americans for Progress (APAP), the APAP National Board is pleased to endorse your candidacy for President of the United States. Over the past year, we have followed your campaign with great interest and admiration. Your message of inclusion, hope, and change has inspired Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across our nation to become more involved in the political process."
Additionally, the APAP National Board selected Senator Obama because he is the Presidential candidate that will best serve the needs and interests of Asian American and Pacific Islander community.
"The Asian Pacific Americans for Progress looks forward to working with Senator Obama on his historic campaign because we believe in his fight for social justice, comprehensive immigration reform, closing the health disparities gap, assistance to community development and small businesses, renewed support for public education, full equity for Filipino veterans and other critical issues important to the community. Additionally, we hope that an Obama Administration will bring along a renewed focus on the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders," said Chin.
Senator Obama's half-sister Maya Soerto-Ng is an Indonesian American, who is currently a college professor that lives in Hawaii. She is married to Konrad Ng, a Chinese American.
"We are proud to have Maya and Konrad as representatives and surrogates for Senator Obama." Chin added. "They are a tremendous team that has inspired Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to become involved in Senator Obama's campaign across America."
