金焰今年17歲,是私立John Burroughs高中三年級學生,學業成績優異,興趣廣泛,對於數學和科學成績特別好,高中二年級時就成為奧林匹克美國數學隊代表,並在科學新聞及研討會上發表科學文章。金焰同時熱愛音樂喜歡彈鋼琴,這是他放松自己最有效的方法。在學校交響樂團,他則擔任小提琴手。運動方面,金焰是John Burroughs高中足球校隊及前摔角選手。
在社區服務部分,金焰曾赴老人安養中心演奏鋼琴,及到密西西比河Chouteau小島清理垃圾。自聖路易現代中文學校畢業後,他仍舊回學校擔任義工,教同學們數學和參與學校的假日演出。
金焰是聖路易Model UN會員,曾任會長及2008年Model UN訪問荷蘭代表,在學校班上金焰曾擔任會長、副會長等職位,並被選為該校校報The World的美術編輯,顯示領導才華。
OCA Youth Leadership Recipient: Mike Jin
Mike Jin is 17 years old, and he is a junior at John Burroughs School. Mike is a well-rounded individual with many interests. He is strong in math and science; he was invited to take the USA Mathematical Olympiad as a sophomore, and he has written articles in science presented at conferences and published in scientific journals. Mike also has a strong passion for music; he especially loves playing piano, he views it as his most effective means for relaxation and release, and he has won many solo competitions at the state and national levels. He plays violin in his school orchestra and enjoys listening to music of all genres, including rock, world, alternative, classical, and rap. Mike takes an interest in many competitive sports. He plays on his high school Varsity soccer team, and he is also a former wrestler.
Mike is an active member of his community. Recently he has performed on the piano at nursing homes and traveled to Chouteau Island on the Mississippi River to clean up trash. After graduating from the St. Louis Modern Chinese School, he maintained his connections with the school, performing miscellaneous volunteer work, teaching a math class and coaching a winning math team, and accompanying the choir on the piano at a holiday performance. Mike is an active participant in Model UN, having been chosen President of the General Assembly of the St. Louis Area Model UN and also having been chosen as a delegate to the 2008 The Hague International Model UN in the Netherlands. At school, Mike has served as president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer of his class, and was chosen layout editor for his school newspaper, The World.In his free time, Mike most often plays piano, reads, or spends time with friends, and he also enjoys playing guitar and reading news articles on the internet.
