UMSL scholar honored by Normandy Schools

        Lynn Beckwith, Jr., the E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professor of Urban Education in Cooperation with the St. Louis Public Schools at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, received the Normandy School District's "Citizen of the Month" award during the district's board of education meeting April 16.

        Beckwith, of Florissant, Mo., was selected by the board as the April "Citizen of the Month" due to his support and work with the district.

        “IIt's a pleasant surprise to receive this recognition from the Normandy School District," Beckwith said. "As the endowed professor of urban education at UMSL, I feel strongly about providing technical assistance to urban and urban-like school districts as they seek to improve the academic achievement of their students. Therefore it was a pleasure for me to be of service to the Normandy School District.?

        As the endowed urban education professor at UMSL, Beckwith helps improve schools and prepares new educators in the St. Louis Public Schools, as well as other local urban districts. He works directly with the districts to develop innovative ways to link them with universities and the community.

        Before joining the university, Beckwith was superintendent of University City School District. He also has over 30 years experience with St. Louis Public Schools.
