Flash flood of September 14 at the City of University City

        As a result of the flash flood the morning of September 14 the City of University City suffered fatalities of two residents. As the River Des Peres jumped its' banks throughout the community at approximately 12:30 PM, University City Emergency City personnel responded to the 1100 block of Wilson to a report that a body had been found in a rear yard. The investigation revealed that an individual had drowned after being caught in debris. Residents reported seeing the man, along with a female companion attempting to push a car out of the flooded street. The deceased man has been identified as Willie Johnson, age 81. City rescue workers were unable to locate the female companion.

        University City Police and Fire personnel continued to search for the missing female. It was discovered this morning that the female was swept away by floodwaters. A tugboat crew notified the St. Louis City Police that they had recovered a female body from the Mississippi River at the confluence point of the River Des Peres, on the afternoon 9/14/08. St. Louis City contacted the crew in the area of Davidson and Broadway. This morning the deceased was positively identified as Louise Bryant, age 64. The City's condolences go out to the families of both deceased residents.

        The flash flooding caused over 100 single-family homes to be evacuated. For families continuing to struggle with the destruction caused by the flash food, shelter is being provided by the Red Cross at Centennial Commons, 7210 Olive Blvd. contact the Emergency Hotline at 516-2700.

        All bridges have been inspected and intersections cleared. The City is grateful to Metro for assisting with transportation of flood victims, and the rapid response from the utilities securing streets from greater fire risk. The University City community pulled together to support each other in this difficult time and appreciate the support of the region in this difficult time.
