Economic Development Conference Focuses on East St. Louis Revival; Big Plans for Downtown

The Casino Queen Hotel Ballroom hosted an all-day economic development conference on Thursday with more than 100 business leaders, entrepreneurs, government officials and residents to share and discuss how to revitalize a city long associated with blighted neighborhoods, high unemployment and crime. One developing project that came out of the conference was the redevelopment of the business and entertainment that once thrived along a three-block area downtown, from Martin Luther King Drive to Division Avenue. The Utah developer who proposed the idea, Lynn Leasure, also would like to renovate Collinsville Avenue, and the construction of a landing area for live performances and carnivals. Leasure said his "Main Street" development would be "a journey through time," reflecting history and architecture throughout the 20th century with attractions that would rival Branson, Mo. and Williamsburg, Va.
