        Flu vaccination campaign at SLMCS

(By Chi Zeng) On 10/19/2008, young kids and the elderly gathered at the St. Louis Modern Chinese School for flu shots provided by Barnes Jewish Hospital of Washington University in St. Louis, free of charge.

BJH volunteers arrived at around 12:30 pm, nearly one hour before the school opened. It was 5:10 pm when the last shot was administered.

This was the second year that BJH provided free influenza vaccinations to the Chinese community at SLMCS. Many physicians, nurses, nursing school students and supporting personnel from BJH, as well as other local hospitals sacrificed a beautiful Sunday afternoon to volunteer in the event. Many parents and students at SLMCS also actively helped out in organizing the event. Some of the volunteers are Barbara Bogomolov, Peter Bogomolov, Holly Chang, Baolin Fan, Xinying Hu, Elisabeth Jason, Shujie Jiang, Matrika Johnson, Elbert Kuo, Xiumei Lin, Auwyn Liu, Jie Ren, Yeanping Soung, Christy Spilberg, Jackie Wang, Xiaobin Yi, Haifeng Zhang, Jingyuan Zhang, Andrew Zhou, Yihua Zhou, Rensheng Luo.

The event was a great success. 320 adults and 264 children were vaccinated, up from last year's 258 adults and 118 children. The recipients of the vaccine included many parents and students of SLMCS as well as others in the Chinese community. This event also helped to raise the importance of disease prevention.

The event was led by Yihua Zhou, M.D., Ph.D. and Barbara Bogomolov, RN of BJH. Dr. Steven Player was in charge of acquiring the vaccine and supplies. Barbara was actively involved to the last shot. She personally delivered vaccines and supplies to the site and administered vaccines. Additionally, Brenda Battle at the Center for Diversity and Cultural Competence of BJH was an important supporter of the event.
