DETAILSThe Formosa Quartet won first prize and the Amadeus Prize at the prestigious 10th London International String Quartet competition. Their UMSL concert will mark their first performance in a University of Missouri System tour. The quartet will perform Bedrich Smetana's 1876 String Quartet No. 1 in E minor ("From My Life") and Shih-Hui Chen's String Quartet No. 5, Mei-Hua, which was composed for the Formosa Quartet in 2007.
The Formosa Quartet formed in 2003 for a concert tour of Taiwan, the land of the original members' shared heritage. They named the quartet after "Ilha Formosa," the name given to the main island of Taiwan by a group of 16th-Century Portuguese sailors. Formosa means beautiful.
Gramophone called the Formosa Quartet's playing "remarkably fine both in meticulous response to the letter and in a desire to look beyond the notes." The concert will feature a guest performance by Scott Lee, associate professor of viola at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
