Notre Dame High School Hosts Students and Faculty from Notre Dame- Kyoto in Japan
East met West at Notre Dame High School last week as faculty and students from ND's sister school in Kyoto, Japan visited St. Louis. Nine high school students and two teachers arrived in St. Louis on Saturday, March 21, for five days of American culture.
Notre Dame students and faculty were treated to several cultural demonstrations by the Japanese students, including an origami and brush-writing class, a Japanese dance, and a traditional tea ceremony. The Japanese students also attended classes with their American peers and were able to participate in several activities, including a science dissection.
Among the stops on their trip was a visit to the Gateway Arch and City Museum on Sunday, March 22. The Japanese students also got experience the culinary treats of America with stops at Ted Drewes, Gus' Pretzels, and a home-cooked meal prepared by Notre Dame parents.
For one Japanese visitor, this visit to America will not be her last. Yuki Shinya, a student at Notre Dame-Kyoto will be returning to St. Louis in August 2009 to attend Notre Dame-St. Louis for a year as a part of a cultural exchange program. While in America, Shinya will attend high school classes as a sophomore at Notre Dame and live with a host family. For the past 4 years, Notre Dame has hosted both a year-long exchange student from the Kyoto school as well as an annual visit from the ND-Kyoto students and faculty. In June 2008, Notre Dame- St. Louis students and faculty spent two weeks with the students and faculty of Kyoto.
Notre Dame High School has been a beacon of educational excellence in St. Louis since the school opened its doors in 1934. For 75 years, Notre Dame has worked to educate thousands of young women to become confident, compassionate, Christian women leaders.
Notre Dame has developed an educational plan for global awareness that is designed to help students understand their impact on the world and the global economy. As part of this global awareness and through the world-wide connections of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, ND-St. Louis students have had the opportunity to visit other SSND establishments in places such as South Dakota, Honduras, and of course, Japan!
