Happy Birthday Dr. Peter Raven!
RCGA Breakfast With The Gazelles This Friday, June 19th, Features Dr. Peter Raven

Dr. Peter Raven
Plan to join us for the next RCGA Breakfast with the Gazelles featuring Missouri Botanical Garden President Dr. Peter Raven, this Friday morning, June 19th, in the Regional Collaboration Center at the RCGA offices.

Peter's presentation topic is, "Missouri Botanical Garden's 150th Anniversary," providing a fascinating insight into the Garden's rich history dating back to its founding by Henry Shaw in 1859 to the Garden's current programs and initiatives, which not only contribute to St. Louis, but are having impacts throughout the world.

Peter has worked since the 1960s to promote biological diversity, climate change, international cooperation and conservation of the natural world. A steadfast leader in positioning St. Louis as the BioBelt: The Center of Plant and Life Sciences, he was recruited as Director of the Missouri Botanical Garden in 1971, after teaching at Stanford University. In 2006, his position was renamed President and Director. He is also a tenured faculty member at Washington University where he is the Engelmann Professor of Botany. The RCGA presented Peter with its most prestigious award, the RCGA Right Arm of St. Louis, in 1999 for his extraordinary contributions to the St. Louis region.

Time magazine named Peter its "Hero of the Planet" in its January 2000 special issue commemorating the New Millenium.

A frequent speaker nationally and internationally on the need for biodiversity and species conservation, Peter recently announced his plans to retire in 2011, to coincide with his 75th birthday and his 40th year at the Garden.
