Red Cross Presents Lifesaver Community Award to MODOT
Missouri Department of Transportation recognized for providing Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED training

The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter recently presented its Lifesaver Community Award, sponsored by AAA, to MODOT - District 6, for providing Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED training to 295 employees.         St. Louis, Tuesday, June 23, 2009 - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) is usually recognized for keeping the roads safe, but now the organization is being honored for keeping their employees safe as well. The St. Louis Area Chapter Celebration Team, comprised of Red Cross volunteers and staff, recently presented the Lifesaver Community Award, sponsored by AAA, to the Missouri Department of Transportation - District 6 for encouraging participation in Red Cross safety training. In the past three years, 295 people have received Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED training through MODOT.

        "MODOT plays a large part in keeping the community as a whole safe, and by preparing staff members for emergencies, MODOT is continuing that commitment to saving lives," said Joyce Bathke, executive officer of health and safety services at the St. Louis Area Chapter.

        As a Red Cross Authorized Provider, MODOT has trained 10 Red Cross Certified Instructors who are able to teach members of the organization lifesaving First Aid/CPR/AED.

        Additional details regarding MODOT's preparedness efforts include the following:* In the past three years, 10 Red Cross certified instructors have taught 295 people First Aid/CPR/AED classes.* MODOT has purchased three Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and trains employees on a regular basis on how to use them.* MODOT has held five blood drives, collecting 240 units of blood in the last three years. Since each unit can save up to three lives, that's more than 700 lives potentially saved!

        About the Red Cross Lifesaver Program:The Lifesaver Award Program, sponsored by AAA, is designed to inspire others to get trained in First Aid and CPR by recognizing local citizens for preparing themselves to respond in an emergency situation. Last year, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter trained more than 82,000 local residents in CPR and First Aid, including more than 17,000 in the use of AEDs. Since its inception in 1984, the Red Cross Lifesaver Program has honored nearly 400 St. Louis heroes. The program supports the Red Cross mission to help our communities prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies. In 2007, the St. Louis Area Chapter expanded the Lifesaver Award Program to include the Lifesaver Community Awards.
