聖路易--這座鼎鼎有名的棒球城市上次主辦棒球全明星賽已是43年前的事。那比1994年棒球運動員工會罷工，以至當年總冠軍賽取消，攪黃了美國老百姓的傳統夏季消遣要早幾十年；比“興奮劑時代”開始本壘打比賽，並牽連進眾多棒球大牌明星要早；比洋基隊比賽的門票漲到$2500一張也要早。因此，本月中旬密西西比河邊的這場全明星賽，對棒球比賽組織者，對球迷，都可謂是期待已久。聖路易以紅雀隊聞名，棒球傳統源遠流長，球迷對棒球的喜愛與崇尚是其他地方不可比擬的。波士頓和芝加哥的球迷可能會有異議，但這兩個城市都比聖路易大，其他運動強項分散了對棒球的忠誠度。聖市是一個相對較小的球市，能把三百多萬人的注意力集中到棒球場。當晚Busch體育館座無虛席。在開球儀式前，克林頓、布希父子和卡特這幾位美國前總統通過現場錄影對全明星賽進行了祝福。隨後在歡呼聲中，奧巴馬身穿芝加哥白襪隊夾克，走向球場中央的投手丘，將球投進了紅雀隊明星，臨時充當捕手的Albert Pujols的棒球手套中。第80屆美職棒全明星賽就這樣開始了…… 經過九局激戰，美聯全明星隊在一度2比3落後的情況下，逆轉不利局勢最終以4比3險勝國聯。而美聯坦帕灣光芒隊的Carl Crawford成了本場比賽的MVP。 Our Favorite Pastime, Preserved In St. Louis... St. Louis and its Cardinals are throwbacks, as steeped in tradition and respect for the game as no place else. Boston and Chicago fans for starters will argue, but those are large cities with competing sports allegiances. Here's a small market able to get three-million-plus people out to the stadium and compete against richer teams in the league for over a century.
