St. Louis Public Library Ranked #2 In The Nation

The St. Louis Public Library has been ranked #2 in the nation (up from 4th place last year) in the Library Category of the just-published America's Most Literate Cities study conducted by Central Connecticut State University. The study focuses on cities with populations greater than 250,000. This marks the 6th straight year that the St. Louis Public Library has ranked as one of the Top 5 urban libraries in the U.S., a ranking no other library has ever accomplished.

The Library category was based upon library support, holdings and utilization. Four variables were considered for the final score:* Number of branch libraries per 10,000 library service population (the St. Louis Public Library operates 16 branches within the St. Louis City limits)* Volumes held in the library per capita of library service population (the St. Louis Public Library has over 1 million books in its collection)* Number of circulations per capita of library service population* Number of library professional staff per 10,000 library service population

The study is designed to capture the literacy of the United States' major cities by focusing on 6 key indicators of literacy: newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment, and Internet resources. Detailed information on the rankings is available by clicking here.

The Central Library at 13th and Olive was built in 1912 on a location formerly occupied by the St. Louis Exposition and Music Hall and was designed by Cass Gilbert, architect of the Saint Louis Art Museum and the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C.

St. Louis Public Library Executive Director Waller McGuire also notes that work continues on the $76 million renovation and enhancement to the Central Library. One of the goals of the renovation is to increase the amount of public space in the building. The project includes plans for a 300-seat auditorium, restoration of historic ceilings, the overhaul of the stacking system and a new entrance on the north side of the building.

The Central Library houses many of the library system's most prized collections, including 1904 World's Fair materials and a broad collection of historical and contemporary maps. It also houses one of the most extensive and valuable collections of architectural drawings in the nation, including original drawings by architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
