Ann Rynearson Retires; She is 30-Year Veteran of International Institute/

St. Louis, MO - Ann Manry Rynearson, Sr. Vice President for Culture and Community, at the International Institute of St. Louis is retiring after nearly 30 years at the helm of the Institute's arts programs.

Rynearson was honored as part of the International Institute's Annual Report to the Community, held on April 23. More than 125 St. Louisans including members of the St. Louis Chinese Community turned out to recognize Rynearson's importance in promoting ethnic arts and cultural diversity. At the event, the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) presented a check to purchase a brick in the Institute's entryway in honor of Rynearson.

Among Rynearson's many achievements is serving as co-founder of International Folkfest which operated for 14 years in the Greensfelder Complex at Queeny Park and, more recently, the International Institute's Festival of Nations, now in its 11th year at Tower Grove Park on our City's Southside. She served as Festival director in 2008 and 2009.

Rynearson began her work at the Institute in 1980 as a part-time vocational English instructor for newly arriving refugees. In 1987, she created the agency's research and development department, which eventually grew to a division with events, research grants, community crime prevention and safety projects, and community outreach. She retired from fulltime work at the beginning of 2009; preferring to focus exclusively on building the Festival of Nations which had grown exponentially, by then attracting 125,000 visitors annually.

"Ann Rynearson has been a significant factor in building the International Institute to the organization it is today," said Anna Crosslin, Institute President & CEO. "She has ensured that our programs operate effectively and efficiently and also with a heart."

For more than 90 years, the International Institute has been helping to strengthen community bonds by providing integration services to new Americans and fostering cross-cultural understanding. Annually, more than 7,000 immigrants and refugees from 100 countries learn English, find jobs, and receive other adjustment services at the Institute. The agency also provides interpretation and translation services for 500 local businesses and other non-profits, and hosts Festival of Nations, our region's largest multicultural celebration, this year to be held on August 28 and 29.
