佛教慈濟基金會由 證嚴法師創立，秉持佛陀「無緣大慈，同體大悲」的慈悲喜捨精神，四十多年來，推動慈善、醫療、教育、人文、國際賑災、骨髓捐贈、環保、社區志工等四大志業八大法印，於全球五大洲。
感恩聯合國大會對佛教慈濟基金會的肯定，2010年7月19日，聯合國經濟及社會理事會（ECOSOC）於紐約聯合國總部舉行的大會中，正式宣布佛教慈濟基金會獲得「聯合國經濟及社會理事會非政府組織具特別諮詢地位之會員」（NGO in Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC of the United Nations）。
肩負此身份，慈濟自然會遵守聯合國憲章，達成任務。
慈濟的精神目標，是淨化人心、祥和社會、天下無災難，均與聯合國之憲章與理想信念相契合。因此，往後慈濟也會根據過去四十多年所累積的經驗、所依循的法則，參與聯合國會議，繼續執行各項任務，也促使聯合國「千年發展目標」（MDG）之達成，奉獻一已之力。
慈濟在國際賑災，有數十年的經驗，從安身、安心、安生活，到災民的膚慰與陪伴。至今已踏上全球五大洲、七十個國家，包括在南亞大海嘯、阿富汗難民危機、土耳其與巴基斯坦大地震、美國卡崔娜颶風、中國四川大地震、海地與智利大地震等災難中，慈濟皆盡地球公民之責，所做皆符合聯合國之宗旨精神，展開人道援助工作，發揮救人、救世、救心之良能與使命。
廿一世紀，全球氣候變遷引起的災難及人為戰亂與赤貧，讓世界面臨多種生存挑戰。慈濟的賑災模式雖然不是在戰爭現場、或走在危險的第一線，但在人道援助方面，包括在慈善、醫療、教育與人文等領域，不論過去、現在或未來，皆會盡最大的努力，踐履佛陀本懷，追隨菩薩芳蹤，以無私的大愛付出，聞聲救苦，拔苦予樂。
Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation is officially an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council
(San Dimas, CA, USA) On July 19, 2010, Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation became an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC). This is a significant recognition of the Foundation’s contributions around the world.
Tzu Chi has more than 20 years of international disaster relief experience, providing relief in 70 countries, to people suffering from disasters such as the Southeast Asia tsunami, Turkey earthquake, Pakistan earthquake, Sichuan China earthquake, Hurricane Katrina, Haiti earthquake and Chile earthquake. The Foundation’s principle is to relieve suffering for all living beings with gratitude, respect and love, regardless of nationality, religion or ethnicity.
The Foundation’s spirit and principle is in accordance with the humanitarian spirit of the United Nations. In the future, the Foundation will be participating in United Nations conferences, sharing its experiences, and contributing to the accomplishment of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals.
Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation was established in 1966 by Venerable Dharma Master Cheng Yen. In over 40 years, the Foundation has grown to be an international humanitarian organization with over 5 million members in 48 countries, providing relief in 70 countries. The Foundation dedicates itself in the fields of charity, medicine, education, environmental protection, international relief work and the establishment of one of the world's largest bone marrow donor registry. It also promotes humanistic values and community volunteerism.
In 1984, Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation in the U.S. was established in California as a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Since then, 87 branch offices and facilities have been established with over 100,000 members in the U.S. working to make a difference in their local communities.
