Sec. Of Commerce Supports Local Chinese Trade EffortsChinese Officials Expected In Here Next Month To Sign Off On Cargo Deal

St. Louis, MO (KTVI-FOX2) - Some St. Louisans blame China for taking American jobs. But trade with china can increase jobs here dramatically, according to the U.S. Commerce Secretary, in town to cheer on St. Louis's global trade efforts. The twice weekly Chinese cargo flights to Lambert starting next year, could eventually become dozens of weekly flights.

But it'd be the u-s goods flying back to China that would create new jobs. Missouri exported 740 million in goods to china last year.

"that figure would grow more quickly if it was easier to get from here to there." "turn Lambert St. Louis international airport into a Midwest hub for exports to China."

The commerce secretary was in town to help give a global trade award to senator kit bond. But he was also here to help cheerlead the China hub deal.

"having a new efficient way for St. Louis area companies to expand exports into Asia could mean serious new business for thousands of local firms, especially small and medium-sized businesses."

What kind of business? Well, china has a mammoth pollution problem, due both to human pollution and giant sandstorms because of spreading deserts.

"you have engineers, environmental technology, just cleaning up the water, providing safe drinking water, reducing air pollution. clean energy. these are things that American companies, and you in Missouri, excel in."

Which could be a bonanza for St. Louis firms in everything from plant science to medicine. And while the commerce secretary was here; the president was meeting with china's president, talking what else, two way trade.

And with a Chinese delegation due here next month to sign off on those first cargo flights, Washington's starting to notice the jobs potential, of a St. Louis trade hub to Asia.

Just how big is that Chinese market for goods from here? Consider, the growing Chinese middle class is about 330 million people. So their middle class is about the size of the entire United States.
