The City of St. Louis was notified by ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) on December 14th that it has been chosen as one of eight ICLEI STAR Community Index Beta Communities. The STAR Community Index is a national, consensus-based framework for gauging the sustainability and livability of U.S. communities. The selection of the City of St. Louis as one of the 8 Beta Communities is an excellent opportunity for both the City and the St. Louis Metropolitan Region to step up as a national leader in helping to revolutionize local sustainability performance.
This project will benefit the City and St. Louis Metropolitan Region as follows: (1) Establishes a framework for sustainability - based on the pillars of environment, economy, and social equity - with goals and validation measures for local government and community functions; (2) Development of an online data-management platform (software) that gathers, organizes, analyzes, and presents information required to meet community and government sustainability goals through effective management; (3) Establishes a management model and rating system that drives continuous improvement in community health, vitality and prosperity for all residents; and, (4) Recognition for City and Region - The selection of the City as one of the 8 Beta Communities will reinforce the St. Louis Metro Region's sustainability leadership role, which will assist in attracting businesses to the area, the creation of new jobs, and the retention of young professionals. The City will be working closely with Sustainable St. Louis and other regional sustainability leaders on this project.
The other cities chosen by ICLEI as Beta Communities are: New York (NY), Atlanta (GA), Boulder (CO), Chattanooga (TN), Cranberry (PA), District of Columbia and King County (WA). ICLEI members in the St. Louis Metropolitan Region include City of St. Louis, Clayton, Creve Coeur Edwardsville (IL), Kirkwood, Olivette, St. Louis County, Town & Country and University City.
