On Tuesday June 5, 2012, Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel visited the office of the St. Louis Chinese American News to share with the Asian American community some of the programs that he administers in his capacity as State Treasurer. The visit was hosted by Francis Yueh, chief editor of St Louis Chinese American News with Spencer Tan the CEO of LanternFest, the entity behind the outstanding Lantern Festival being held at the Missouri Botanical Garden, Dr. George Wu, lawyer from Armstrong Teasdale LLP, small business owner Paulo Lee and newspaper staff in attendance.
Treasurer Zweifel discussed several programs and initiatives during the visit, but two programs deserve special mention. One program of particular interest to small business owners is the Missouri Linked Deposit Program that provides low interest loans to qualified small business owners. Since 2009, Treasurer Zweifel has approved more than $1 billion in loans impacting 17,500 jobs and farmers.
Another program of note is MOST - Missouri's 529 College Savings Plan. MOST 529 encourages Missouri families to save for higher education, while taking advantage of significant federal and state tax benefits. Contributions of up to $8000 ($16000 for married couples) annually can be deducted from Missouri income taxes, and all earnings are free of federal and state income taxes. This program is an effective way for families to start saving their children's college education.
Treasurer Clint Zweifel was accompanied by his staff member Vin Ko to visit St. Louis Chinese American News.
