The tiny municipality of Calverton Park in North St. Louis County is the site of a pair of new speed cameras.
The cameras are the first in the state to carry the blessing of the Missouri Department of Transportation.
The cameras will go up in on North Florissant Road near Walnut Grove Elementary School, which is a 25-mile-per-hour zone where drivers are routinely pulled over exceeding 50 mph.
"What's happening here is the officer has to devote his entire morning and afternoon to hanging around in that area, just to enforce the motoring public's violation," Calverton Park Police Chief Vince Delia said.
Unlike previous cameras which have gone up on interstates and freeways, MoDOT will endorse speed cameras within certain criteria according to Tom Blair, an Assistant District Engineer for MoDOT.
"We will review and consider for approval, automated speed enforcement in school zones, travel-safe zones, and work zones," Blair said."Calverton Park has a school zones that meets all of the requirements."
The cameras will only be in operation for one hour in the morning and one in the afternoon as students are coming and going from school.
