The University City City Council Monday Jan. 14 approved a contract with Will Electronics to add four additional cameras to the Delmar Loop area. The cost of the additional cameras is $35,517.
The board voted to add the cameras at its December meeting. The first round of cameras were installed in the Loop over the summer.
The existing cameras are attached to buildings and provide University City Police with a view of the street and public parking lots. While the cameras had been in the works for years, business owners really pushed for them after a particularly disruptive weekend last April in the Loop, which involved hundreds of unruly young people.
Director of Public Works, Parks and Forestry Rich Wilson told the Loop business owners in earlier this month that the in the few months since the installation of the cameras, city officials-especially the police chief-loved the cameras and what they added to the police's ability to solve crimes.
