(ST. LOUIS) - The St. Louis Symphony is pleased to announce the appointment of Steven Jarvi to the post of Resident Conductor, effective at the start of the 2013-2014 season.
Recognized as one of the country's fastest-rising conductors, Jarvi is no stranger to the St. Louis Symphony. He was at the podium for the first St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra concert this season last November. In his new role, he will serve as the YO's Music Director and also lead various concerts on the St. Louis Symphony's schedule, including education and family concerts, community concerts and Live at Powell Hall performances. Other duties will include assisting the music director and guest conductors in rehearsals. His first appearance as resident conductor will be at Forest Park on September 17, 2013.
"It is wonderful that we managed to get Steven Jarvi,"
said Music Director David Robertson, "It is unique combination of talent, innovation and inspired, infectious music making will be a delight for the Youth Orchestra and an excellent addition to the St. Louis Symphony family."
"I am honored and thrilled to be joining the St. Louis Symphony and St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra," Jarvi said. "his orchestra's incredible history and sense of tradition are matched equally with warmth, outstanding musicianship and a commitment to the community. My wife, Joanne and I look forward to becoming a larger part of the St. Louis community and thank the orchestra and David Robertson for welcoming us into their musical family." As a guest conductor, Jarvi has appeared throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. Jarvi is currently the Music Director of Winter Opera St. Louis and was formerly Associate Conductor of the Kansas City Symphony. He came to Kansas City after several years as the Conducting Fellow at New World Symphony in Miami Beach, as an Associate Conductor with the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center and as an Apprentice Conductor with the Washington National Opera in Washington D.C.
Jarvi holds a Bachelor's degree in music theory from the University of Michigan and a Master's in orchestral conducting from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with the legendary conducting pedagogue, Gustav Meier. |
