On Saturday, June 1, 2013, 30 children from St. Louis' Families with Children from China learned about The Silk Road during their Chinese Culture Day 2013 at the St. Louis Modern Chinese School. They gathered their supplies for their journey which included an abacus and samples of silk, spices, rice, tea, vegetable seeds, jade and cloisonne, paper horses, camels and scrolls of knowledge and many gifts from the Chinese community. They learned about the contributions of Confucius, Kublai Khan, Xuanzang and Marco Polo, useful Chinese phrases and the Dunhuang dance. They visited Xi'an and Dunhuang and learned about the Terra Cotta Warriors and Buddhism meditation. The teen volunteers from the St. Louis Modern Chinese School helped the children write and pronounce the Chinese characters from their worksheets, trade their goods and led them through the different Silk Road stops during the day.

The parents enjoyed Tibetan Singing Bowls and Gongs by Patti Pellerito and a presentation on homeland tours by Iris Culp from Lotus Tours. Recorded music from Lion Li, Anne Wang and Simon Hsu entertained during the catered lunch from LuLu's Seafood Restaurant.

The Families with Children from China would like to thank the many Chinese organizations that helped to make this day so successful including the Confucius Institute, Fo Guang Shan St. Louis Buddhist Center, Gateway Greening, LuLu's Seafood Restaurant, Minds Ahead Academy, The Missouri Botanical Gardens, OCA St. Louis - Asian Pacific American Advocates, St. Louis Immersion School, St. Louis Language School, and the St. Louis Modern Chinese School. We are very grateful for the generous support of time and talent from Christie Hogg, Pat Kinney, Charlie Roth (Creative Memories), Kendra Welch, Brian & Erin Wetteroff, and the St. Louis FCC board.
