The 136th Annual Veiled Prophet Parade kicked off the 2013 Fair St. Louis celebration for the Independence Day weekend.
The parade began at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of 14th and Olive Streets and headed down Washington Avenue for the first time.
Lieutenant Colonel George Hardy and Colonel George Boyd served as the 2013 Honorary Grand Marshals. Hardy and Boyd are two of the remaining Tuskegee Airmen, an elite group of African-American Air Force pilots known for breaking the color barrier in the United States military beginning in the 1940s.
Hardy was also a member of the Red Tails, an all African-American fighter group credited with helping turn the momentum of World War II.
At the end of the parade, the Experimental Aircraft Association's World War II B-17 bomber, Aluminum Overcast, was joined by the AeroShell Aerobatic to officially open the Fair.
