Lambert-St. Louis International Airport spokesman Jeff Lea said Thursday that the airport will gain two flights this spring, to Washington, D.C.'s Reagan National and New York's LaGuardia airports, due to changes required by last year's merger of American Airlines and US Airways.

Lea confirmed what St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said in remarks at the Business Journal's State of St. Louis event Thursday morning: that the airport actually gained two flights as a result of the deal, rather than losing flights.

A spokesman for the combined Fort Worth, Texas-based American Airlines Group Inc. confirmed Thursday the airline will add flights from Lambert to Reagan National and LaGuardia, but would not specify the number of flights. A call to Lambert officials for additional comment was not immediately returned.

The combined Fort Worth, Texas-based American Airlines Group Inc. (Nasdaq: AAL) announced Wednesday that it will end daily nonstop service to 17 cities from Reagan National and three cities from LaGuardia, but that combining American's and US Airways' networks would allow new service to some communities. The service changes are a result of American's planned divestiture of slots at both Reagan National and LaGuardia as part of the settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice that allowed the merger's completion in December.

American officials said effective dates for the changes will be announced in the coming weeks after the slot divestitures are completed.

American currently operates 29 daily flights from Lambert and US Airways operates 16 daily flights, according to Lea. The airlines will retain their individual names until American Airlines Group is granted a Single Operating Certificate from the FAA, which could take 18 to 24 months.

American Airlines is the second-largest carrier out of Lambert, behind Southwest Airlines.
