The new MetroLink station will be located between Boyle Ave. and Sarah St in St. Louis' Cortex innovation district.
Metro Transit has secured most of the funding it needs to build a new MetroLink station in the Cortex innovation district.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is granting $10.3 million from its Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, program.

"This is the lion's share of the funding," said Metro Transit President and CEO John Nations. The federal grant covers nearly all of the project's nearly $13 million cost.

"We put together what we thought was a very strong application with a lot of good reasons supporting job growth in that area of town," he said. "We're very proud of the strength of the transit system and the strength of our partnerships to be able to secure grants like this for the St. Louis Region."

The specific design for the new MetroLink stop, between Boyle Ave. and Sarah St., has yet to be completed, but Nations estimated the project will be complete in 2017.

The grant is one of three announced Tuesday for transportation projects across the state totaling more than $21 million. In Kansas City, a project that aims to double the number of jobs accessible by public transit received a $1.2 million TIGER grant. $10 million was also awarded to the Missouri Department of Transportation for a new bridge over the Missouri River in Washington, Mo.
