        Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John

In Genesis 1, the Bible tells us that we are created in God¡¦s image. God is eternal and we are eternal also. So I am not going to use past tense to describe Papa. He lives on forever. He is just not with us on this earth anymore. I represent my three brothers to tell a little bit of Papa¡¦s stories. Papa has four sons, four daughters-in-law, and 9 grandchildren (my daughter Christine got married last year. My son-in-law¡¦s name is Colin Thomson). Papa named his 4 sons: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Yes, the four gospels. So I want to use our names to tell Papa¡¦s stories.

        THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW

Matthew, the Levi, was a tax collector. The purpose of the Gospel of Matthew is twofold: First, it is an apologetics, i.e., a defense of the proposition that Jesus is the promised Messiah of Old Testament prophecy. Second, it is an encouragement to the Jews that, even when they crucified their Savior, the salvation is for all who believe. So the verses that best represent Papa¡¦s life from the Gospel of Matthew are:

        Matthew 28:18-20

18 And Jesus came and said to them,¡§All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and?make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.¡¨

Papa took these verses very seriously and preached the gospel in Taiwan, United States of America, American Samoa in South Pacific, Australia, and China.

        THE GOSPEL OF MARK

The gospel of Mark characterizes Jesus as the servant who came to do the father¡¦s will and 40% of the writing is devoted to the Lord¡¦s final journey to Jerusalem to be crucified for our eternal salvation.

        Mark 1:9-11

9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens split open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 Then a voice came from heaven, saying: ¡§You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you!¡¨ I still remember the moment when papa and mama were baptized at the same time. From the time Papa was baptized, God began to transform Papa¡¦s life to prepare him to be a servant of God. Two or three years later, Papa was called to quit his job to study in the Taiwan Baptist Theological Seminary. In Mark 1:38-39, it says: 38¡§Let¡¦s go to the neighboring town, so I can preach there, too, because that¡¦s why I came.¡¨39 So he went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.¡¨

We were very poor when Papa decided to serve in a country church. Being poor was never a deterrent for Papa to preach the gospel. I still remember the time after we finished the Sunday morning worship at ¥Ûªù¤ô®w Baptist Church, we would pack up and travel to Às¼æ, a town about 45 minutes away to preach the gospel. So Papa modeled after his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to be a servant of God.

        THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

The Gospel of Luke underscores the Lord¡¦s humanity. Christ the Lord left his throne to become a human being for the purpose of saving us from eternal damnation. Luke was a physician by profession. He thoroughly investigated the claims of Jesus¡¦ miracles. Luke writes in 1:3-4, ¡§3 I, too, have carefully investigated everything from the beginning and have decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.¡¨ Then Luke began to write about the births of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ.

Papa was trained as an engineer. He was sent by the Chinese government to America twice to study military strategies and hardware. He also studied the Bible diligently so he was able to explain the Bible to people with clarity. He often woke up at nights with scriptures in his mind. He would then share the scriptures with me in the morning. He frequently commented on the reasons why he believed in the Bible so much, for both its historical accuracy and supernatural power.

Luke 24:45-47 states: ¡§Then he opened their minds so that they might understand the Scriptures.46 He told them, ¡§This is how it is written: the Messiah[a] was to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,47 and then repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.¡¨

Papa carried out the mission that was given to him wherever he went. Sometimes we were embarrassed about his boldness in sharing the gospel. Now we know that he was merely obedient to his Lord and Savior.

        THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

John, the son of Zebedee and brother of James (Mark 1:19), was the author of the fourth Gospel. John was a part of that inner circle of disciples. Of all the apostles, he was closest to the Lord. John¡¦s basic purpose is to offer the evidence of certain signs which prove that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that those facts lead to eternal life.

John 3:16: ¡§For God so loved the world,[a] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.¡¨

Papa not only held on to this promise himself, but he also earnestly shared this promise with so many people. His footsteps impacted so many places and lives. Family members and friends, my Papa is not a great man. Instead he was an ordinary man with the power of an extraordinary Lord and Savior. On Sunday 12:07 p.m., I could almost hear the Lord saying to Papa, ¡§Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.¡¨

Papa was a soldier his entire life. He served in the Chinese army early on in his life and later he joined the Lord¡¦s army. He likes a saying from General Douglas MacCarthur, ¡§Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.¡¨

At the time when he departed the world, I could almost hear him whisper 2 Timothy 4:6-8, ¡§For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.¡¨

Here are the gospels of Jesus Christ: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Papa, we will see you soon.

Dad's memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at First Baptist Church of Ellisville, 137 Clarkson Road, Ballwin, MO 63011. Please come to celebrate my dad's life with us. (written by Matthew Yu. ´å¶}¦t.)
